Pakistan's e-commerce market crossed Rs. 650 billion in 2025 and continues growing at 25–30% annually. Behind that number are thousands of entrepreneurs who started exactly where you are — with a product idea, a phone, and the question: where do I even begin?
This guide covers the practical reality of launching an online business in Pakistan, step by step, without unnecessary theory.
Step 1: Decide What to Sell
The Pakistani online market has clear patterns. Categories that consistently work:
High-demand, proven categories:
- Fashion and clothing (Pakistan's largest online category)
- Mobile phones and accessories
- Home décor and kitchen items
- Cosmetics and skincare
- Electronics and gadgets
- Kids' products and toys
- Books and stationery (growing)
Emerging opportunities in 2026:
- Artisanal and handcrafted goods (domestic and export)
- Organic and health foods
- B2B supplies (office, industrial)

What to avoid starting out:
- Highly regulated products (pharmaceuticals, firearms, financial products)
- Very heavy items (shipping costs destroy margins on COD)
- Counterfeit products (platform bans and legal risk)
- Products with 50+ established competitors on Daraz unless you have a genuine cost or quality advantage
Validation before inventory: Before buying Rs. 100,000 in stock, post the product on a WhatsApp story, Instagram, or a Facebook marketplace listing. Get 5–10 genuine inquiries before committing to inventory.
Step 2: Register Your Business
For small businesses starting out, you have three options:
Sole Proprietorship (recommended for year 1):
- Register with your local District Management Office (free or nominal fee)
- Open a current bank account in your business name (requires business registration certificate)
- Register with FBR for an NTN (free, done online at iris.fbr.gov.pk)
- No minimum capital requirement
Private Limited Company (recommended once revenue is consistent):
- Register with SECP at secp.gov.pk
- Minimum 2 directors required
- Minimum paid-up capital: Rs. 100,000 (nominal in practice)
- Annual compliance requirements (audit, annual return)
Most first-year online sellers operate as sole proprietors. You can convert to a private limited company later.
For opening a bank account: HBL, UBL, Meezan Bank, and Bank Alfalah all have reasonable small business current account options. Bring your CNIC, NTN certificate, and business registration. Avoid starting with a personal savings account for business — mixing personal and business finances creates accounting problems quickly.
Step 3: Set Up Your Store
You have three primary options:
Option A: WhatsApp + Instagram (lowest barrier to start)
Most Pakistani online sellers start here. Post your products on Instagram, direct inquiries to WhatsApp, process orders manually. This works up to approximately 20–30 orders per day before it becomes unmanageable.
Upgrade path: When you're doing consistent sales here, add a proper store (Option B) and use WhatsApp as the customer service and follow-up channel rather than the primary order channel.
Option B: Shopify (recommended for serious stores)
Shopify is the most widely used e-commerce platform in Pakistan. Rs. 5,000–8,000/month for a basic plan, with Pakistani courier and payment integrations available.
Setup essentials:
- Choose a clean theme (Debut or Dawn work well)
- Add your products with proper photos (white background for product shots, lifestyle photos for context)
- Configure shipping zones by city (Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, other)
- Connect your courier (TCS, Leopards, or Trax via their Shopify apps)
- Add payment methods (JazzCash, Easypaisa, bank transfer)
Option C: WooCommerce (most control, more technical)
WordPress + WooCommerce gives you maximum flexibility and lower monthly fees, but requires more technical maintenance. Recommended if you have technical resources or want to avoid Shopify's transaction fees on Pakistani payment gateways.
What about Daraz?
Daraz (owned by Alibaba) is Pakistan's dominant marketplace. Selling on Daraz gives you immediate access to Daraz's 30M+ customer base, but you compete on price with hundreds of sellers, pay 8–15% commission, have no customer relationship (Daraz owns the customer, not you), and face strict seller policies.
Use Daraz for volume discovery — find out which products sell — then build your own store to sell those products at better margins with direct customer relationships.
Step 4: Accept Payments
Pakistani customers use several payment methods, and you need to accommodate all of them:
Cash on Delivery (COD) remains 60–70% of all Pakistani online transactions. Most customers don't trust prepaid ordering for stores they haven't bought from before. You must support COD.

Bank Transfer is used by B2B buyers and higher-ticket B2C purchases. Provide your bank account number prominently and confirm payments before dispatching.
Credit/Debit Card adoption is growing (particularly in urban Karachi and Lahore) but still below 20% of the market. Add card payments once your store is established.
Step 5: Set Up Logistics
For COD delivery, you need a courier partner. Your options:
